A friend and I saw that cat on Monday down in the station. Seemed quite friendly and even got pretty close to me. We called animal control and they knew just what we were talking about and told us they had been feeding him/her and they would be picking hum/her up Monday or Tuesday. I wonder how many days it's been since it's seen daylight.

I know I have no idea the cat's temperament or veracity to go up the tunnels during the day or anything, but Kenmore is at the end of the tunnels in 3 different directions. If that cat wants daylight, I'm positive it's figured out how to do so already.

I saw that cat on the tracks a few weeks ago, but didn't act quickly enough to get a photo. One of the T workers was trying to entice the cat off the tracks before the trolley pulled in, and he managed to do so.

I hope the cat stays safe.

The cat is probably having a buffet with all the mice in the station. Don't touch that third rail, kitty!

I saw the cat this past Saturday. It looks like someone is taking care of it because behind the wall was a cat bed, some food and a cat carrier. Still pretty inhumane letting the kitty stay down there though.

Hi All,

A few weeks ago I saw the cat on the tracks. The MBTA employee in the booth said it was his. Today, I recognized him at a different stop in Brookline and asked him about the cat.

Apparently, the cat has been there for 8 months or so. They've made several attempts to catch it, as many people have offered to adopt the cat and give it a good home. No success.

Passengers and MBTA staff bring the cat food, milk, and water daily. You can leave it with the man in the booth at the Kenmore station if you would like to donate.

The man said he recognizes the orange jackets and knows it means he is safe it is feeding time! He has mastered the sequence of the trains and knows exactly when to get off the tracks before a train arrives.

He says the cat will follow him around and stay close to his leg when no one is around, but the second he reaches down to try and pet it, "Kenmore," as everyone has named it, will run away. He's just as discontent with the cat living there and would love to give it a proper home but the cat cannot be caught!

So until then, if you are concerned please donate food or any other items to give the Kenmore Kitty a good home!

They're not called "animal control" for no reason. The cat can be caught if they actually wanted it caught. Until then, I guess they're just content to believe foolishly that the cat has "mastered the schedule"...until they're scraping him off of the rail.

If you live with cats, you usually notice that they can hear things - like sounds or even vibrations - that are meaningful.

It took our cats a week to be able to detect my husband's motorbike. When we got a new car, it was a couple of days before they would jump up as it rounded the last corner. My late Mario LeMiaux would alert me when he heard the boys' school bus enter the neighborhood a half-mile away, and practically push me out the door to get them when they were smaller. (he followed me one day and hid as the bus pulled up)

My guess is that Kenmore simply hears the train coming or feels it on the track bed. I'm also betting that, given Kenmore is feral, he will be a tough catch and will not be able to live in a human home and will be euthanized. A third bet: the station staff want him around because that's many fewer rodents that they have to deal with.

Otherwise, I'm sure he could figure out how to catch Kenmore!

I'm with Kaz here. However, if it seems there is little hope of Kenmore being put either in the MBTA "owner's" home or a respectable foster home with other feral kitties, I'd love to donate some food. Does this guy have any contact info? I'd kind of feel like a fool walking into Kenmore station with a bag of cat food.

The cat is still there and seems content. He follows the station person up and down the tracks and when a streetcare comes he howls and runs to the platform.
I tried to speak to the person in the booth and he seemed annoyed by the attention the cat was receiving so I think he's not a cat person.
I thought it was nice seeing the cat there. I keep cats and they do adjust. This one seems feral and figured out a pretty good gig. Keep those kibbles coming.

Skimbleshanks keeps the trains running on time in the musical CATS!

...Any day now the Carmen's union is going to picket that station. Unless of course Kenmore has already joined, and is getting overtime & double time for all the hours he's logging at the station.

So weird! I followed a link my friend posted to the Boston Globe article, then came here and saw the link to my photo! I had know idea this whole thread had started up. I'm very glad to find out that Kenmore found a home.
