Old pay toilets never die, they just wind up behind a fence in South Boston

Old pay toilet on Dorchester Avenue in South Boston

Lauren Demarco discovered today that the pay toilet that used to sit in front of the new wing of the Copley Square library has been relocated to a lot on Dot Ave. in South Boston.

If I recall correctly it's going to be put back.

There is a whole new plaza/landscape there including fabulous trees (which are in) and someday outdoor seating for the coffee shop at the corner. It's going to be great.

I remember when they introduced these toilets - they were modern, cleaned themselves, but the location was not exactly prime (the doors opened automatically on Boylston Street after a time to prevent "lingering").

Over time, the city toilet on Boylston St was always "out of service," and in this picture, it looks like it's permanent.

The neighbors and the business owners around Ashmont station are trying to get a public toilet placed on the plaza at Ashmont station. Everyone in the neighborhood is getting fed up with the junkies using the plaza as an open toilet and shooting up in the neighborhood rest rooms.

Turn it into a safe space for addicts with EMS attendants. The Dutch do that and it sorta works.

Nobody in their right mind would use these pay toilets. They are nothing but a haven for intravenous drug users.

Care to share the source of this?

Other than something your dad told you about public restrooms in 1970, when he also decided the red line was too scary for you to use?

Have you ever used one? Ever seen one? The doors automatically open after three minutes and you have to deposit money to get it to open in the first place. Even Superman would have to hurry up!

You've clearly never been in one LOL! The "source" for this? Wtf are you talking about; no one is publishing research papers on boston public toilet use. I used one and I've talked to people who have and they were disgusting.

Also if you don't think that a veteran iv drug user can't shoot up in less than 3 minutes you should do some research of your own

...the Orange Line is. :-)

Seriously, homeless people used to camp out in those things during the brief era long ago when the doors actually opened and you could get into one. If you didn't mind doing your business with them in there, fine. And they really didn't care if the door opened after three minutes. There were also lots of ways around putting money in.. Tokens, what we used to call "slugs", etc.

Greater Boston on WGBH covered the mechanical and social failures of these toilets quite well a few years ago.

Clearly a suburbanite like you has no idea what you're talking about.

This is at the end of middle st on for ave, right where I live. I always knew I'd make it onto universal hub. Exempt not for living near where boston stores it's decommissioned toilets

Last year I saw a guy (presumably homeless) openly defecate at the corner of Summer and Atlantic Streets.
