The newspaper that thinks it's TMZ.com

That would, of course, be the Metro, which today determined that Tiger Woods's little mishap was the day's top news, which set off Marshall T. Spriggs:

... Since you seem to be rapidly becoming a Boston specific version of the TMZ website that you reference in your lead article, the only question left to me is whether I should even bother to pick up the Metro. ...

Raising money off evil people

The Accidental Fiddler reports how she made some money yesterday for a Jewish anti-hunger group thanks to those deranged loons from out in the Midwest somewhere who show up here every so often (you know the ones):

... So yesterday, they picketed several places in Boston; the only one I could get to was their picket of the Jewish Advocate office downtown. There were about 10 of them to start, which went down to four, two of whom were young boys. So I rosined up my bow and played my fiddle hard, 'cause hell's broke loose in Boston and the devil carries placards.

I played all the Jewish music I could think of, including Chanukah music and selections from Fiddler on the Roof; they were out there long enough that I had to repeat myself a few times, and I was shivering and couldn't feel my fingers by the end, and I doubt I disrupted them in any way, but it was worth it. I took Chris's idea and put a sign in my case stating that proceeds would go to Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger. I think I made about $20 for Mazon. ...

Why some MBTA buses were saying farewell to Anna Baptista yesterday

Baptista, 52, was a T bus driver, out of the Charlestown garage, who died of cancer on Nov. 24 and whose memory coworkers wanted to honor. Her funeral is this morning.

According to her obituary, Baptista came to the US from Cape Verde when she was 9; she set aside her dreams of becoming a novelist to support her family by driving a T bus. Last year, she became a US citizen. One person who knew her writes:

She was legendary on the MBTA and a very good friend to all that knew her. To know her is to love her. Anna was always loved and will be loved.

H/t: Heather Marie Vitale.

The divas of Dumpster diving

The Globe profiles local "freegans," who rummage through trash not because they have to, but because it's cool - including one who sadly has become desensitized to all the good food and had to stop hosting huge group meals consisting entirely of food rescued from Dumpsters.

The Phoenix declares Mattapan man a rapper's delight

Chris Faraone interviews Singapore Kane, who says he's the best rapper in Mattapan:

... "I stand out for a few reasons," he says. "I don't really consider myself a street dude, but you can look me in the eyes and see that I got stabbed right in my face. I've seen someone get shot a couple of times, and it's something that will give you nightmares. Rappers need to stop glorifying bullshit and tell both sides of the story. If you talk about selling drugs, then you have to talk about going to jail." ...

But is Mattapan too old school? Maybe it's time to make way for Roslindale.
