Poley moley!
Dedham spent two years and God knows how much money repaving and realigning Washington Street past the West Roxbury line and yet somehow it couldn't get the phone company to move its stupid poles at the re-done intersection with the Dedham mall entrance/exit road. So instead crews just filleted some traffic barrels to give the poles demure little skirts and then poured the new asphalt right around them.
It's even worse on the other side of the road, where drivers have to actively maneuver around one of the fool things to turn right onto Washington:

After all, the cities/towns and the utility companies seem to think they can just plop poles and boxes in the sidewalk wherever they feel like sticking them - even if they render the sidewalk impassible or chair ramps unusable.
Why not just stick them in the middle of the road?
Sad thing is: The road came to those poles

They used to be on the sidewalk; the town did some extensive realigning of that intersection, no doubt related to the traffic lights it (finally) installed there. You almost have to admire how the poles not only got left in place, crews actually poured the asphalt around them.

Yup. It appears that the road was widened and the sidewalk was not. Those poles are just standing up for pedestrian rights.
It's about time someone in an SUV has to deal with them, and not some poor lad in a wheelchair struggling through unplowed snow.

There's a pole in the road on the entrance road to Legacy Place too, and that's been there for over a year.

This is the type of thing that makes it onto websites like this one, but that are based elsewhere:
"Hey I went up to Massachusetts to visit my uncle and you'll never guess what I saw! It was right after I nearly killed myself driving through one of those crazy traffic circles!"

That part of Washington Street is a state road, so I'd think it was MassHighway that did the reconstruction, not Dedham.

Whatever it is, this is the kind of second world shit that we are starting to see more of. When I was in Russia in the early 90s this would not have been a big surprise. The kinds of second rate and third rate fixes that would have been unimaginable in the United States 15 years ago are beginning to creep in gradually and I think this is only one further sign of a marked decline that we can expect for the rest of our lives--with an increasing frequency.

They're not really "telephone poles" anymore, are they? Doesn't the (whatever) electric company own them? Submit this to Globewatch.

Dedham has always been a joke when it comes to any sort of public infrastructure project going on in their neck of the woods. Look at the bridge at the Rt. 1/Washington St. circle. How long has/had that been going on? Is that even finished yet?
That's been finished for awhile now

And that was definitely a state project, so you can't blame Dedham for that (actually, it was pretty speedy compared to the amount of time it took for the far smaller Bridge Street bridge).
