Imagine this:
Widen the overpass part over the Pike and redesign with a slower traffic parkway with parkland Ian's pedestrian and bike lanes integrated.
Then drop down to landscaped surface streets and reconnect the Fens with the Charles and the Esplanade as well as with Comonwealth Mall.
Deck over the Mass Ave underpasses on Comm Ave and have the Mall come all the way into Kenmore Square while also connecting to the Fens (and basically Fenway Park.) A few well placed cafes, esp. in warm weather?
This could all be done slowly and incrementally and the results would be spectacular.
Develop over the Pike

Use the air rights and to a tasteful slim project over the Pike. Project could incorporate the greenspace non-vehicular flow from Fens toward river.
It could also finance it
Heck, put in some Pike ramps while we're at it. Route that traffic more directly between major city artery Boylston and the turnpike.
Olmsted saw and built for this needed green space even before the traffic came.
It's not that hard. People first.
Traffic will find its way. No need for it to be here.
Nantucket

Not true - also most of Coos & Grafton counties in NH, the bit of VT right over the border from that, and most of Maine (but not the part that most people live in! - I almost wrote "not the part that anyone lives in" but decided I'd be literal instead of figurative).
