Boston firefighters are at the Comm Ave. bridge inbound over the turnpike and the Worcester Line train tracks, where some large steel plates over a construction zone have settled too much, leading to concern they might give way. MassDOT engineers have been requested to the scene.

I don't understand why they don't just shut down all traffic on the turnpike and Comm Ave and B line and BU Bridge for say one month and just finish the whole thing in an unimpeded flurry. Just get it over with, save tons of money, and then instead of many months [or even years] of traffic issues you only have one month.

You just don't see it from above because it's occurring underneath the bridge. That's why last year the green line almost fell through the bridge.

I thought it's the other way around -- they're doing the major construction *because* the Green Line tracks shifted and a chunk of concrete fell (which isn't the same as the train almost falling through).

Apparently there's no other time. We have the Red Sox season, BU summer classes, BU regular classes during the year and they probably didn't want to have the potential winter weather screwing things up. This might be the only timeframe that minimizes the amount of people affected. Or maybe I'm mistaken.

They have planned the bejeezus out of this - including having built a full mock-up at the old train yards. In reality, most of the steel work will be done in 5 days, leaving plenty of time to finish the deck surface....

I think it's the window between BU summer session and ramping-up for fall. Area is at its least-busy, least-populated.
They'll do two sectors of the bridge this summer, and the other two next summer.
