Did they put their bodies on the line for a Congress Street Bike Lane?

Folks had more to say about it which you can read here.

...and dedicated bus lanes are a no brainer to move people around a city. why is it taking so long?

I agree. This should be done in places where the sidewalk is ridiculously wide, where some genius envisioned 6+ plus people walking side by side.

I would like all the sidewalks painted with lane markers too, yellow stripes down the middle at least. When people walk on the wrong side of the sidewalk it really tweaks me - we're not in England!

Because Marty is a 1950s style political machine dinosaur with that era's infatuation with the unquestionable supremacy of the automobile demanded by General Motors and the Seven Sisters cartel.

Lots of people who ride the T don't vote and don't "donate" to candidates. That's part of the reason.

The other part is a majority of people drive and falsely think that commuting is a zero-sum system: Anything which helps other roadway users must be negatively impacting them.

Who are you to say this "helps" cyclists. I don't want your bike lanes

I have mixed feelings about cycle tracks but some paint won't hurt anything.

Who are you to say health insurance "helps" people? I am a person, and I believe in individual responsibility! Eat your vegetables and take the stairs!

cost and feasibility and priorities and....

I love the bike zealots. They operate like their concerns are the only concerns the city has.

I love the bike zealots. They operate like their concerns are the only concerns the city has.

This is true. Also true that car zealots act like they have priority. Same with public transportation peeps.

The unlucky slob in the middle gets to coordinate all of this, look at the big picture and receive the most grief for any decision made.

But, if there weren't people crying for more, they wouldn't get anything. Golden rule for bargaining, right? Ask for more than you think you will get?

Wow. Amateurs who will get themselves (or someone imitating them) hurt or killed.

Could you just stay home and get the stupidity out of your system by watching the "Kramer adopts a highway" episode of Seinfeld?

NB - not criticizing (nor necessarily praising) the idea of a bike lane there. Very much criticizing people who circumvent authority, do it wrongly, and do it unsafely.

Hardly ever see the circumvention of authority here in the Colonies. God Save The Queen!

Yeah, I see similarities between the Sons of Liberty and these folks. And it is not a good thing.

A bunch of nerds standing in a line is dangerous, anti-authority radicalism!

picked off doing this crap and then watch them jump up and down when the driver, who could not see said nerd standing long the side of a narrow bridge in the dark, and then they will scream at the authorities to do something against said driver.

Would you not drive especially carefully when you see a whole mess of people in the road? You would, because to do otherwise would be negligent operation of a very dangerous vehicle. All those people are staying in one spot, if you can't keep from hitting them you need to not drive, and if you decide to drive anyway and hurt someone, you deserve to face the law.

On behalf of my loved ones who ride on city streets I salute you. Thanks for doing this.

Hardly a heroic act. Don't minimize a powerful word like hero with this nonsense!

Let's reserve the word for professional athletes and people who choose a career killing foreigners.

you agree with them, at least have the decency not to refer to them as sandwiches.

Putting themselves in danger, in an act of civil disobedience, to benefit others.

...benefit?

Try "potentially putting others in danger".

Who are they putting in danger?

Please, do tell!

I've been a daily year round biker in this city for the past 15 years. I like that some bike lanes and road markings have been implemented. But the "urban planners and designers" are going too far. Not all roads should have bike lanes. In many places Sharrows are much more appropriate. Cyclists need to merge and flow with car traffic, especially in these areas typically I'm going much faster on my bike than people in cars.
"Protected" Bike Lanes are the WORST.
Please do not let the bike bullies ruin any more of the streets in Boston. If they ruin the wonderful flow of Beacon Street in the back bay, i swear I'm buying a hummer.

The problem is that students and seniors don't feel comfortable riding on sharrowed roadways. Normal commuters probably don't mind as much, but most bike infrastructure projects aim for an 8-80 age range.

8 year olds riding on a busy roadway? Hell no.
There is a reason for the age limit of motor vehicle operators on the roads. Children belong on the sidewalk with a guardian.

Urban riding requires skill and courage.
People who "demand protection" belong behind a windshield.

How many kids have you raised? You clearly don't know the first thing about the abilities of eight year olds on bikes.

The roads are for all to use to get around. Dependence on driving is not appropriate as it excludes those too young and those with issues that prevent them from safely driving.

Car culture and car exclusion are damaging our health and limiting people's ability to navigate, when the roads belong to everyone.

Everyone here was 8 years old once, very likely had a bike, and is glad they didn't get killed doing something they now consider stupid.

up

Yet I would not let an eight year old ride the streets of Boston for reasons that should be obvious to you.

up

Which is why we're trying to fix that. With safe dedicated bike infrastructure.

You mean the street people drag race on and that has seen many fatalities as of late? The same street in which a couple walking on the sidewalk was killed when a car ran a light and jumped the curb?

Yeah, great "flow" on that one.

Safe children suck. You should totally run them over with your hummer.

City of Atlanta 10th Street Cycle Track.

Cambridge MA bike paths

Cambridge MA separated bike facilities

The term “separated bicycle facility” or “separated bike lane” photo generally refers to a bicycle facility with a physical separation from the motor vehicle travel area, often through barriers or grade separation. Sometimes also called protected bike lanes, raised bike lanes, or cycle tracks, they are typically located between the street or parking lane and the pedestrian sidewalk. Most designs reduce or eliminate the risk of dooring and research shows that separated bicycle lanes increase safety, supporting the City’s goal of creating more equitable transportation opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.

There are 32,000 km of cycle paths in Netherlands. That's almost almost 20,000 miles! Let's see how John and Beatrice plan their bicycle day trips, video.

Utrecht Netherlands is a university town about twice the size of Boston

A lot of people commute in the winter by bicycle in Utrecht. This was first snow in 2011. It was a light snow but it snowed all day so it took another day to get it cleared
