Must've gotten lost on the way to the woods - or Egypt

Woodcock in downtown Boston

The Downtown Boston BID spotted this bird downtown today and wondered what it was.

We're hardly bird experts up here at the UHub mountain fastness, but we're pretty sure that's a woodcock - which is known to walk like an Egyptian:

Yes, that is a woodcock. But they belong in forest edges and meadows. I can't imagine what the poor guy is doing in the middle of downtown Boston.

Been hearing a lot of unusual calls from the trees over the last few weeks. Fall migration isn't as sexy as Spring, but it seems like there are a lot of species on the move right now. Are woodcocks travelers?

Sounds like a Downeast Americana band.

Fun fact: they arrive back north quite early, just about when the snow's off the ground. Their mating flights/displays are... memorable.
Another fun fact: an alternative name for the woodcock is "timberdoodle."

as Cranky says, and this is when they migrate. They are snowbirds, heading south to kick back in Virginia, or wherever. A few of the real party birds make it all the way to Florida.

He's probably a bit confused. They migrate at night, and the tall buildings and bright city lights may have made it hard to figure out how to leave, and which way to go. I've often felt that way myself.

The ruffedgrousesociety.org/migration-map tracks Woodcock activity, looks like some heavy action out by Gardner! I've found a few errant (and dead) birds downtown over the years (including a sapsucker, scarlet tanager and woodcock), Audubon Society say they may get pushed here by storms or confused by lights during migration and hit buildings (reflective glass).

I just spent the last hour in the seaport trying to help this exact bird. I witnessed him fly into no less than 3 buildings. He is obviously lost and disoriented. He needs help being relocated.
