Hey, remember when everybody got upset because some protesters shut I-93?

State Police shut I-93 north in Dorchester this morning so the Patriots could have an easier time getting from Gillette to the airport.

Shutting down the Southeast Expressway, or any other highway with fast-moving vehicular traffic on it is especially way beyond the height of stupidity. At those high speeds, it's especially difficult to slow down, let alone stop, and further increases the chances of serious injuries and/or deaths.

to a screeching halt, or large barriers magically appear in the middle of the road (as happened with the protesters). They use a procedure called a rolling roadblock to slow down the traffic in a controlled manner so it eventually comes to a stop.

And, as the 'convoy" they're escorting to continually moving, unlike when they use a rolling roadblock to highway work, the delay to traffic is minimal.

up
Voting closed 0

that the Southeast Expressway is extremely tense anyhow, and shutting down traffic on it, for protesting, or whatever, just makes an already nightmarish situation a hell of a lot worse.

I'll also add that, since there are times when I've had absolutely no choice but to drive on the Southeast Expressway. Even at "off" hours, traffic has been slowed down rather horrendously due to accidents, construction, or whatever. Protestors who insist on blocking such freeways, however, tend to make already-horrific situations worse.

When was the last time you actually had to commute to a job?

I drove in with my husband and neighbors the day of the BLM protests. Heading southbound into the city was actually within the bounds of the usual mayhem, and we honestly didn't even notice anything out of the ordinary.

Removing the exclusion on the carpool lane has done vastly worse mayhem to traffic than any single protest or accident ever did.

And this morning? Traffic is still well off of the pre-pandemic peak on most roads. Not as clear as in May, but many office bots are still at home until at least January.

I work at home, but you know what? I've had to drive on the Southeast Expressway to get my car serviced by the dealer who I purchased my car from a bit over seven years ago, to go to Yale Supply and Lighting down in Dorchester to buy new needed supplies, and I periodically go down to Bird & Reptile Connection, where I purchased my pet Congo African Grey parrot, in order to purchase supplies, and to board her when I'm going away on long trips, or even overnight trips, and to have her flight feathers and nails clipped.

Having said all of the above, I've got no other option but to take the Southeast Expressway when I go to all those places, so don't go telling me that it doesn't count, don't try to undermine or underestimate me, and don't get feeling too snotty or virtuous. I worked at a job for sixteen years, which got outsourced, plus I had a supervisor who was just about as much of an asshole as you are.

Over and out!

For a 7 year old car? Can I have some free money too?

up
Voting closed 0

I don't have free money. I trust the mechanics who work at the dealership where I purchased my car more than I'd trust a lot of these independent gas stations/mechanics. Anyway, what the fuck do YOU care who I go to to get my car serviced?

up
Voting closed 0

I’ve done pretty much everything on a car except rebuild an engine and swap out a transmission. You can do no worse than the dealership. They are mostly dishonest.

Very few independent shops are dishonest. Their name is on the building, they have pride in their work. I’ve never been ripped off by an independent shop. The dealership has recommended work that didn’t need to be done several times.

up
Voting closed 0

I took my Durango for a recall to the dealer in Medford and they tried to recommend I replace my timing belt. I had to ask them how exactly they would accomplish such a task since my vehicle doesn't have one. They had to think on that one.

They then tried to charge me $1000 for recall work and wouldn't call FCA to to get it covered so I had to do that and make FCA call them and tell the dealer to cut the crap. So dealers I've dealt with are shady.

up
Voting closed 0

some are shadier than others. The same thing goes for the majority of Insurance companies. I once got another car of mine serviced at a branch of the long-since defunct Monroe's repair shops, due to a brake problem. Not only did they charge me much too much (over five hundred dollars), but they put in a some re-built brake calibers, to boot. When I talked to a Toyota dealer service person about it, and described what happened, the service person told me that Monroe's shop had totally rooked me and charged too much, and that replacing the break calipers, especially with rebuilt ones, was absolutely wrong, and unnecessary, and that if I'd come there, all that would've been needed was to lubricate the calipers that were already in there.

A few years afterwards, I ended up getting my first new car. I've been driving Honda Civid 4-door sedans since, which I love.

up
Voting closed 0

So what? I had an independent shop charge me for changing the PCV valve when my car didn't have one. Therefore should I conclude that all independent shops are shady?

up
Voting closed 0

That's all very well. Not everybody does, however, and I'm admittedly among the ones who don't know about how to repair cars.

I've had at least a couple of instances when i've been rear-ended, while stopped at a STOP sign or a red light, and, in both instances, I've used Tech Auto Body, on New Street, in Cambridge, to get the damage repaired. They've done a fabulous job.

You may think you're hot stuff, but I find you totally arrogant, nasty, and intolerant of anybody who doesn't think the way you do. Public transportation around here has never been that great, either.

I'll also add, SwirlyGrrl, that the Southeast Expressway is the absolute worst route here in Boston. Not only is it rush-hour 24/7 on that highway, but it's got a lot of the most aggressive drivers, to boot.

Slowing down traffic in a controlled manner to give a convoy of buses carrying a group of people to a specific destination (in this case Logan Airport) is far safer than having those buses fend for themselves in the chaotic "free for all " conditions normally found on the Southeast Expressway.

up
Voting closed 0

I’d like to hire a detail to stop traffic and slow down everyone else’s commute so I can get to work easier but I can’t. Just because they can, and get away with it doesn’t mean they should. They should leave earlier just like everyone else or fly at off times.

Not to mention the police would laugh me out of the barracks if I asked them to do this.

“The escort of the Patriots’ buses is a regular, longstanding detail paid for by the team to ensure secure transit to the airport, similar to any other paid detail escort for motorcades or specialized material transports,” Dave Procopio, a state police spokesman, told Boston.com in statement. “Because we make every effort to minimize disruption to motorists, today’s escort necessitated a lane closure that lasted only approximately three minutes.”

And I sure hope there wasn't an ambulance stuck in that traffic. Somebody could have died!

Oh, wait, I'm sorry, that was one of the arguments with the protests.

up
Voting closed 0

This, imho:

And I sure hope there wasn't an ambulance stuck in that traffic. Somebody could have died!

is a perfectly legitimate argument.

It used to be that:

A) Protestors did not shut down highways with fast moving traffic on them.

B) The people who organized such protests would make the protestors move aside in order to let ambulances and other emergency vehicles through. When a seriously ill or injured person is being transported to the hospital, time really is of the essence. Every second of every minute of every hour really does count. The fact that nowadays ambulances are often forced to take a longer route to a hospital can and often does have rather devastating affects. Frankly, I think that before totally shutting down traffic, especially at rush-hour, people really should consider that there are people needing to get to important medical appointments, or get their pets to the animal hospital on an emergency basis, or to get to work on time so they won't lose their job.

up
Voting closed 0

It was wrong then, it is wrong now.

They shouldnt be slowing down traffic to let the Pats buses get to the airport. Its not like its a commercial flight. Its a charter.

up

This was done to achieve a real world result (get people to the airport), then open it up to others as quickly as possible. I understand if you disagree that it should have been done, but still a false equivalence.

up
Voting closed 0

this is true - in one case, the highway was shut by normal people seeking to amplify a righteous message

in the other, the state shut the highway because some sports guys had to get to the airport since their game was postponed on account of their star qb contracting an incredibly contagious illness

priorities, amirite?

up
Voting closed 0

I don't have a lot of sympathy for "normal" people totally shutting down traffic, especially at rush-hour and/or on a freeway, just to amplify and emphasize a righteous message.

Secondly, shutting down the Expressway because some sportsmen had to get to the airport was a stupid move, as well. Why couldn't they have been airlifted to the airport? They should've been.

Also, there were more than likely plenty of other lunchrooms, etc., where people could go, who wanted to get a bite to eat.

Google "Letter from Birmingham Jail" and get some perspective.

up
Voting closed 0

I'd start with reading up on the Selma to Montgomery marches, in particular some of the arguments being made against them:

Governor Wallace denounced the march as a threat to public safety; he said that he would take all measures necessary to prevent it from happening. "There will be no march between Selma and Montgomery," Wallace said on March 6, 1965, citing concern over traffic violations.

Saying that protests for equal rights should only be done in a way that is convenient for others is just a way of saying "I don't actually care about this cause". I'd really recommend that you look inward and consider why you consider your own convenience to be more important than the lives and rights of others.

up
Voting closed 0

but people in my family were involved in the Civil Rights movement. So don't give me any of your shit, FungWah.

I'll also add that that bunch of stupid-assed idiots who insisted on blocking the Southeast Expressway also got into these big round hollow cement objects, and then chained themselves together, were not part of the Black Lives Matter Movement. One of the demonstrators who worked for Mayor Marty Walsh got fired by him, and she should have.

if, however, BLM supports that sort of tactic, then that doesn't speak so well for them as a movement.

up
Voting closed 0

a real threat to public safety.

And a bunch of traffic violations.

Probably we should endorse any means necessary to ensure that the roads remain clear no matter what, right?

Again - it's pretty easy to say "I would have supported the movement had I been there, after all other people I know did". But when push comes to shove it sure seems like what really matters is peoples' convenience.

just some facts for you.

on 1/15/15, rte 93 in Milton was blocked by protesters that stated they represented Black Lives Matter. All of the major outlets reported that. If someone disputed that, that's interesting maybe you could share the link. I was able to find information about the city employee that was fired. Thank you for mentioning that, I am disappointed to learn that the city chose to do that.

Blocking the highway is a desperate and dangerous thing to do, but black lives are in danger. I reject the ambulance argument because that ambulance could have gone from Easton to Brockton if some greedy insurance companies thought that Brockton deserved a level one trauma center.

up
Voting closed 0

I don't reject the ambulance or other emergency vehicle argument, because I stand by my opinion that it's a legitimate one. It used to be that the organizers of demonstrations that involved sitting in the middle of the street blocking traffic at least had the good common sense and decency to make the protestors move aside to let ambulances and other emergency vehicles through, and with good reason: When a seriously ill or injured person is being transported to the hospital, when a fire engine is rushing to the scene of a fire, or when a police car is rushing to the scene of a crime, in which an assault, robbery, or possibly worse is in progress, time really is of the essence. Every second of every minute of every hour counts--big time. Even the smallest delay can be extremely dangerous in emergency situations.

Also, maybe more people should ask themselves: Suppose a loved one, friend, neighbor, acquaintance or co worker is in that ambulance being transferred to the hospital, or has another emergency that needs to be tended to?

I recognized that link that you provided for me to read, cinnamngrrl, because I read that article back then, when it first came out. I wasn't impressed with the protestors who insisted on shutting down the Southeast Expressway, got into those big cement things, and chaining themselves to each other, and I'm not impressed by that now.

If people are so concerned about roads being jammed or blocked, then we should probably cancel the Boston Marathon, and certainly not have a red sox game on the same day. Maybe someone can weigh in on how this didn't cause delays getting injured the day of the marathon bombing? What if there had been twice as many bombs? How could ambulances have handled those casualties?

There is this joke of an idea that a peaceful protest or sports motorcade is somehow equivocated with terrible traffic that blocks ambulances from saving someone's grandpa from a heart attack or the cops rushing to catch a crazy murderer or a fire engine rushing to safe a building full of orphans being waylaid by traffic. Before the pandemic, we called that A WEEKDAY. Ever drive to the Cape between June - Sept on a Sat or Sunday?
