At 2:44 p.m., US Sen. Ed Markey reported:
I and my staff are safe, sheltering in place, and following the guidance and protocols of Capitol Police.
He added:
There’s a word for what is happening on the Senate and House floors - it’s called sedition. All these unfounded objections to state electors are seditious. They are nothing short of an insurrection against the established order of the Constitution and our democratic republic.
He later added:
Donald Trump is responsible for the coup that is unfolding at the Capitol. He is a fascist and a direct threat to our country.
— Ed Markey (@EdMarkey) January 6, 2021
Sarah Groh, Rep. Ayanna Pressley's chief of staff, tweeted:
Ayanna Pressley and I are currently safe. Thank you for your messages.
US Rep. Seth Moulton addressed the Nazis in the Capitol:
This is anarchy. This is an attempted coup. And it’s happening in America because of lawless lawmakers. That they are colleagues makes me embarrassed and sad for our country.
— Seth Moulton (@sethmoulton) January 6, 2021
We are being told to shelter in place not because of a foreign terrorist attack but because of a domestic coup attempt. I expected this as a US Marine in Iraq. I never imagined it as a US Congressman in America.
— Seth Moulton (@sethmoulton) January 6, 2021
Rep. Lori Trahan writes:
Members of my staff and I are sheltering in place in the Capitol complex. We are safe and awaiting further direction from Capitol Police.
I am praying for the officers, members, staff and reporters who are in danger, and for our nation on this dark, dark day.

It's closer to being treason than a lot of things people call treason, but as bad as it is, the standard of treason is war, which this isn't exactly, although you could possibly make the case that it was close enough to war to count, since it's not like you need a battlefield and uniforms for it to be treason. And also, the death penalty isn't the punishment for treason, treason is just one of the few crimes where the death penalty is an option. Of the few people who have ever been convicted of treason in the United States, several of them ended up being merely imprisoned, and not even life without parole. People shouldn't let their anger at the current situation distract them from the general principle that the death penalty is bad. But the flip side of that is that people should stop acting like treason is the absolute worst crime you can be charged of, which isn't how the legal system works at all. There's quite a lot of crimes that you can charge someone for breaking into the capitol building with quasi-terroristic intent to steal an election, and they could be seriously punished without using the magic word of treason. (Although it'd be harder to classify it as a capital crime without that charge.)

Style, not grammar
By SamWack
Thu, 01/07/2021 - 8:38am
No, that's a matter of style, not grammar. In this sentence "plus" is being used as a conjunction (some think that beginning a sentence with a conjunction is incorrect, but they are wrong). To see that the comma is not necessary, consider a compound sentence that uses "plus" as a conjunction:
"Murkin is a fuckwad, plus he's an idiot."
Here "plus" is a substitute for "and", useful in this context because it emphasizes the intention to pile on; fuckwad, idiot, it just keeps adding up. Adding a comma after the "plus" may increase the emphasis, but the sentence is meaningful without it. Replacing "plus" with "and" makes this more obvious.

beg to differ on apostrophes. I wanted to bring Wite-Out with me every time I walked into that store as a cranky, bookish ten-year-old. But as a professional writer, I always have room in my heart, even in times of grave national crisis, for grammar pedantry. It's like a cool breeze on a scorching summer day to me. In the words of Gyles Brandreth, from his brilliant "The Joy of Lex":
* Don't use no double negatives.
* Make each pronoun agree with their antecedent.
* Join clauses good, like a conjunction should.
* About them sentence fragments.
* When dangling watch your participles.
* Verbs has to agree with their subjects.
* Just between you and I, case is important too.
* Don't write no run-on sentences they are hard to read.
* Don't use commas, which aren't necessary.
* Try not to oversplit infinitives. [N.B. This phrasing baffles me a bit, too, but Gyles is a Brit, and you get the point.]
* It is important to use apostrophe's correctly.
* Proofread your writing to if any words out.
* Correct spelling is esential.
My personal apostrophe-themed favorite:
* It's is not, it isn't ain't, and it's it's, not its, if you mean it is. If you don't, it's its. Then too it's hers: it isn't her's. It isn't our's either: it's ours, and likewise yours and theirs.
And finally:
* As a general rule of thumb, cross out every word you have written. You have no idea what vigor it will give your style. [Democracy-hating Trumpies, take note.]

There's a reasonable distinction to be drawn between "anarchy" and "anarchism." Anarchy is the state of lawlessness; anarchism is the political philosophy that espouses a society without coercive government. To say that the situation during the invasion of the Capitol was an instance of anarchy is not to say that that invasion exemplified anarchism or that the perpetrators of the invasion were anarchists.
