A concerned citizen complains:
Rotating gate at park street that facilates the exit from inside the subway to the outside. It's extremely hard to push it. Elders and many others will not be able to push it. Needs to be fixed. Citizen here in action!! ;)

That thing always reminded me of some medieval torture device I saw when I was a kid at Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum.
Whenever the Park St iron bars exit was locked shut and marked 'out of order' I always figured someone had just been cut into ragged-edged (but very even) slices.

People may say the old solid steel and aluminum subway infrastructure is ugly, but at least when they built this thing it was built to last. This is the kind of gate you need on a system that has thousands of people using it daily, including rowdy drunks, people trying to force their way in, and so on.
Look at the gates they installed as part of the CharlieCard upgrades. Very pretty, very delicate looking. And look how many are crooked, broken, bent, or covered in duct tape.

in transit circles for these gates is "iron maiden". New York subways once had a version that was an entry gate, used at unmanned entrances - you put your token in a slot and the mechanism would release.

There is a sticky turnstile exit out of central square on the west side of the inbound platform. During rush hour so many people are using the fare gates to enter that it's best to exit via the turnstile. It's not impassable but it would be nice if it was easier to turn.

The proper name of that rotating gate is called an iron maiden. When its working properly, it does it job perfectly preventing fare evaders on any subway system.

Didn't the T use it as an entry gate too, with a token slot to open it? I seem to remember one at the Boylston Street entrance to Auditorium Station back in the mid-70s, but maybe it was just for exiting.
