Jews vow 'never again' on march from Holocaust Memorial to ICE detention center in South Bay

Never again, marchers say

Molly Lanza was among the roughly 500 people who marched this afternoon from the Holocaust Memorial to the South Bay jail, where the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department makes money by renting space to ICE for use as a detention facility.

If you oppose immigration, you should favor stopping the American actions that drive migrants here, like,

a) violence spurred by US gun sales to their home countries,

b) evironmental devastation inflicted by US pesticides on "the fumigated towns" of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay and Paraguay.

The United States has acted as the world's top cop for far too long--meaning over half a century! If people don't want so many illegal aliens coming here to the United States, our government's constant meddling in other countries' affairs has to stop.

Our local politicians express their outrage at the conditions at Detention facilities on our Southern border. None of them have expressed their outrage of the conditions at South Bay or what Sheriff Tompkins does with all the money he receives from the Feds.

To be blunt, it's better for ICE detainees to be kept here than anywhere in the South. They're more likely to survive.

Let's go back to elementary school.

What do we do to little boys and girls who don't play by the rules of civilized society?

Do we
a) Make them sit in the corner until they've learned their lesson
b) Reward them with ice cream and cake and tell them how righteous and pure they are for Sticking It To The Man(TM)

If you answered (a), report to re-education at once.

If you answered (b), you best look behind you when you walk, 'cuz Little Timmy will come for you when he's done having his way with that cake.

And none of which has anything to do with whether or not what we are doing to contain the migrant wave on our southern border bears any resemblance to deliberate and concerted effort at genocide these protestors are alluding to.

Spoiler alert: what we are doing on our southern border bears exactly zero resemblance to *any* atrocity, whether small or large, historical or current.

The death camps didn't just appear full blown one day. Maybe you should read up on the history of Germany from, oh, 1929 onward.

I don't think any of my relatives went to war against Hitler (by the time my father was old enough to be drafted, the war was pretty much over, he served in the occupation of Japan). But I do know now I never got to meet many of my relatives, because they were rounded up and put in concentration camps.

Since 15 posts by the same person remain, this is hardly a case of egregious censorship. I suppose it’s possible that a deleted post just happened to be the one so erudite, with just the right combination of polysyllabic words, that it would have convinced everyone that detention camps are okay if the US is doing it. But the track record of this poster suggests that is unlikely.

Adam has previously mentioned that as moderator of posts from unregistered UHub users he declines to post the most blatantly racist comments he sees. But since there are plenty of social media platforms that allow such speech to flourish, I’m okay with the occasional bit of moderation here.

The fellow I referred to, from what I could see, enjoyed a comfortable middle class life, with a house, kids, extended family, etc. He was not fleeing a culture where violence and torture have been the norm for decades. Violence even worse than the degree of violence in the US.

Immigrants fleeing from nations that have over the decades devolved into barbarism (often with US help) are desperate to save their lives. Just as the Jews the US refused to allow to enter the US and instead forced them back to Nazi Germany.

Your attempt to force a comparison between two different sets - one, a person comfortable and safe but acts with hatred against others, versus people who are running from torture and death, is the proverbial apples and oranges comparison. Both are fruit, but nevertheless are very different.

Again, the problem is the only solution that you can see is what's going on right now. Is there a response to an influx of migrants that doesn't involve keeping kids in cages? When people die in detention at the border, are we correct to treat our government's failure to sustain them while under its care as an acceptable cost of doing business there?

This is way more complex than immigrants bad -- yet you keep throwing out the same old talking points: Don't cross the border illegally; These aren't children, they're criminals; We can't afford the tax burden of treating these people humanely.

Is it possible that there is a middle ground? Or maybe it's politically prudent for this administration to peddle the idea that it's a choice between kids in cages or open borders.

By the way, you're wrong on the last count. https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-middle-east-13405438/israeli-forces-op...

Roman, for his fascistic name, is probably not a genuine fascist. That accusation is not worth one thin Liberty Mercury dime. Neither, considering his religious beliefs and his Russian heritage, would he be in the running for Nazi of the year. If you need proof of that, please, feel free to read a book by Harrison E. Salisbury called 'The 900 Days". Or, use www.duckduckgo.com (the search engine that doesn't track you!) and google 'Operation Barbarossa'. Or, lacking the talent for that, simply youtube a song by Al Stewart called 'Roads to Moscow.' There's seven minutes of your life that will improve your understanding of a fundamental truth...never call a Russian a fascist or a Nazi unless you are really willing to stand by that accusation, oh and have your Obamacare paid up.

Trump's right hand man supports religious individuals who call for the death of all Gay people.

That is genocide.

Therefore Mike Pence supports genocide.

Trump supports Mike Pence. Therefore Trump supports genocide.

Not at the moment people in US camps. There Trump likes to torture with slow torture. Not Medieval torture on the rack. But torture that is slow, based on overcrowding that leads to disease that leads to death.

Pence has made clear, when he was governor of Indiana, and subsequently, that he believes Gay people are evil, and, if they can't be made to disappear, should at least be legally turned into 2nd class citizens. Just type Pence and Gays into a browser.

Pence has also made clear that he considers himself christian. But what kind of christian? A liberal christian who takes sees Biblical text as complicated with stories that are metaphors, thematic and to be studied, or as just historical recitations of angelic visits?

He's made it clear that he sides with the people who insist Sodom is about God destroying homosexuals.

Conservative christians range from wanting Gays to just stay in the closet to wanting to exterminate Gay people.

Here are some quotes:

"Sacramento-based preacher Roger Jimenez is also scheduled to appear. In 2016, he said of the Pulse shooting: “Are you sad that 50 pedophiles were killed today?”

“If we lived in a righteous government, they should round them all up and put them up against a firing wall, and blow their brains out.”

Tommy McMurtry will also attend. He once said that “homos” should be “put in their place: six feet under.”

The full article is here: https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2019/06/preachers-make-america-straight-even...

There is a violent streak among so-called christians. Where has Pence stood among these folks?

Add Trump's needling of Pence (granted anything Trump says is dubious) where he says that Pence would hang all Gays. That was reported on an NBC News site.

Pence is smart enough to realize that politically he would harm himself to make the violence based statements that people of religious violence make. But then he doesn't have to make those statements since proxies do it for him.

This is how social hate and its ultimate expression of genocide develops. Not just regarding Gays in the US, but native Americans in the 19th C., Armenians by Turks, the genocide of Cambodians by Pol Pot and the pogroms of pre-Communist Russians.

We are living in a period where violence of group against group is ascendant. We are fools to ignore the violent threats and the actual violence.

It is becoming a cliche but true nevertheless: When a person says they want to harm, maim or kill another, believe them. Don't just dismiss it as, "Oh, it's just politics."

The belligerence toward immigrants that is used to justify inhumane cages arises from the same spirit of hatred. To hate any group requires dehumanizing them, whether it's brown skin people from south of North America or Gays, Lesbians and other sexual minorities. Once a group is dehumanized then it is much easier to eliminate that group.

For evidence of that behavior of one group against another just look to the acts of genocide that God commands in the Old Testament or Hebrew Bible.

It is ironic that the people most willing to dehumanize a group they dislike also treat Biblical text with a level of idol worship that would make Moses blanch. Perhaps it is a logical and inevitable of psychopathic group psychology.

Sure, the government isn't committing mass murder right now, but they are letting people unnecessarily die by not giving sick people medical care and by housing them in disgusting conditions.

No one is saying that the government is committing genocide. They are saying that the government is violating detainee's human rights. Whether they are here legally or illegally is irrelevant. The Constitution applies to anyone within our borders, not just citizens, as do international agreements on humane treatment. Note that applying for asylum is 100% legal.

The government is also unnecessarily separating children from their families. There is nothing legal that requires this. It's simply a tactic to inflict cruelty on migrant families. It's doing permanent psychological harm to children, who had no choice in the matter on whether to come here or not.

The point of the protests is to say that we are not okay with these conditions, and that historically, there have been many times when camps that began like this got worse and worse over time. The Nazis didn't start with genocide, but by the time they got to that point, the average citizen was powerless to stop it. Let's not go down that path again.

learned that horrible lesson.

Our self produced propaganda is always about how great the United States is. But the truth is that we are cowards who refuse to act until the shame or threat is so great that we are broken by the weight of the good of us with a conscience breaking out past our cowardice.

Immigration. How many Jews would have not been MURDERED had the US allowed a ship of Jews to dock here, instead of forcing the people back to ultimately breathe in Zylon B. How many millions of people forced, naked, utterly vulnerable, would not have died, had the US citizenry not turned away from the monster of Europe?

Our leaders knew what was happening. Just as our leaders know today that we are treating human beings as though they are one step aboe rats. Which NAZIs always compared Jews to.

We are not an evil nation. But when Evil is allowed to rule we become a nation that does evil.

Roman you seem troubled and for some reason want to be taken seriously here.

"billions of people the world over are living in conditions that we wouldn't tolerate in our prisons?

Do you propose we let them all come here?"

Is the reasoning of a six year old (false dichotomy). People can tolerate and be polite to six year olds but they don't generally learn anything from them.

up
Voting closed 26

First your comparison is false. This is not about billions of people.

Second, if the US had the capacity to help every person who suffers then anyone considering themself religious would have to want to help. The point of religion is to understand how to live together, not apart.

Has the US deteriorated to a 3rd world nation?

We are. Slowly but surely. The extreme disparity of wealth is a step toward creating a two class nation. Where there is the wealthy and everyone else. That is part of 3rd world status.

We have allowed our infrastructure to deteriorate, not just in Boston but other US cities to a point where their contribution to our national wealthy is compromised.

Many parts of the nation are or were world status. In the worst days of the South Bronx it was a war zone. Doctor's Without Borders provided medical services to citizens living in the South Bronx in the 70s.

Read Nancy Isenberg's book "White Trash" if you want to learn more about the 3rd world conditions in the US.

The Holocaust and ICE have nothing to do with each other. The illegal aliens came here willingly. Or do you want more illegal aliens to drive trucks like Volodymyr Zhukovskyy?

up
Voting closed 13

Zhukovsky is a legal, permanent resident of the US, who only attracted ICE attention after he killed 7 people. If he was “illegal” I’d think Texas law enforcement would’ve been all over his ass when he was arrested there. And no, I don’t want someone like him to be driving, but the reasons have nothing to do with residency or citizenship.

up

That guy you mentioned isn't an undocumented alien. He is, according to news reports, a lawful permanent resident of the US.

https://www.masslive.com/boston/2019/06/report-ice-files-detainer-agains...

Zhukovskyy’s father told The Boston Herald that his son recently secured a U.S. green card. They are from Ukraine, said the father, who is also named Volodymyr Zhukovskyy.

Also, I'd like to leave you with this, from Brené Brown:

If your response is, "The parents should not have brought their children here illegally", know this: I pray to God that you never have to flee violence or poverty or persecution with your children. And, if the day comes that you must and your babies are forcibly removed from your arms, I will fight for you too.

I dunno Jon. You can point to a lot of things that led to the Holocaust, but certainly one of the most important causes was a country that looked the other way when the state failed to police its agents in accordance with its own constitution. The same is happening now, and the agents are ICE. Applying for asylum is a right. ALL human beings have certain rights in this country regardless of citizenship or immigration status, and those include due process rights.

We need to stop this, Jon. It isn't going to lead to a country you want to live in, unless you're a fascist.
