Lawmakers swing for fences in bid to designate David Ortiz Bridge

The Boston Business Journal reports an otherwise routine budget bill got a last-minute addition that would name the Brookline Avenue bridge near Fenway Park the David Ortiz Bridge.
Here's the language of the spending bill that would rename Brookline Ave bridge over the Pike after David Ortiz. #mapoli #redsox pic.twitter.com/skIOKPlkrP

Excited to move forward on naming the David Ortiz Bridge. As a fan, I'll miss his stride up to the plate followed by a clutch hit @RedSox

Any Word
On what they're naming the broken down train at Ashmont?
Carl Crawford's 2011 Season sounds about right.
Ashmont hasn't had steam service since 1927 so calling it Bob Stanley wasn't appropriate.
Can we stop with naming things after sports people please? I love David Ortiz. My daughter might have had the middle name Davidia if she was born a year later, but we already have the Ted Williams Tunnel, which I think was named in a moment of Jack Daniels inspired thinking by Gary Johnson's fall back guy / support pillow. The EEI idiots will then try to name Route 1 after Brady if this passes in some kind of effort to show we are a FOOTBALL TOWN. It's all horsebleep anyway.
How about we call it the Brookline Avenue Bridge and move on?
By the way, Bob from Winthrop By The Sea, fix the damn T first. Thx.
You can still call it the Brookline Avenue Bridge
There are bridges all over our fair city and Commonwealth named after people that are not called by that name. They pass the bill, put up a sign, have a ceremony, and in 20 years people barely notice the sign while passing through. Have you ever noticed when you go over the Lech Walesa Bridge? It links Kosciuszko Circle with Morrissey Blvd.
It's still better than the name of the street 2 blocks up on the left.
The Sign, that will be a problem.
How many people are going to get injured trying to boost this sign?
The bridge of Route 3 over Hingham Street in Rockland is named for an oral surgeon who used to go to South America to repair cleft palettes and other facial deformities. He was a great guy and used to have his office on Dot. Ave in Peabody Square.
Nobody to the best of my knowledge has stolen the Dr. Dunn sign. Ortiz might be a different type of prize. The DOT is going to have to think differently on this one or there may be UHub headlines like "Fourth Suburban Teen Crippled In Ortiz Sign Ploy" It could be the new Storrowing.
By the way you can thank former State Rep. and Boston Licensing Board Member Dan Pokaski for the plethora of Polish hero named monuments around the Polish Triangle.
yes sure.
lets definitely worry about the safety of would be thieves and property destroyers. thats a good, smart way to live life.
Let's give credit where credit's due
It is due to Joseph Alecks that you can get off of a highway named after a Polish Revolutionary War hero, go over an overpass named after a Polish American World War II Veteran, around a rotary named after a Polish Revolutionary War hero, then over a bridge named after a former President of Poland and, if you go far enough on that road, get to a park named after the first Polish Pope.
I would name them all by name, but I cannot spell Szczeki or whatever the name of the guy the bridge over the railroad is named for.
Mystic River Bridge
Is the exception. I remember my father called it that and then suddenly it was the Tobin.
Yep.
Agreed. He hit a ball very well so a bunch of ppl from Cow Hampshire can cheer. We should only be naming things after people that do something great for the community. Like a teacher, doctor...etc.
Also let not forget that every time the Sox have a home game, the quality of life in the city drops.
Go Os! Go Cubs!
The Buckner Bridge?
My favorite proposal for what became the Zakim was to call it the Buckner Bridge because the roadway goes between its legs.
Given that it's Boston
in 30 years it will be labeled on all the maps as the David Ortiz Bridge and everyone, including traffic reporters and people giving directions to out-of-towners, will call it the Brookline Avenue Bridge "where the Popeye's used to be."
Football Town?
Kinda hard to be a football town when we don't even have an NFL team in Boston!
Go Broncos! Go Teams that don't cheat!
Hey, look who's got the cranky pants on!
Ah yes, it's the SoBo-Yuppie, ten times more reliable than the T, adding his particular brand of unintentional comedy as he compulsively vents his spleen anytime the Red Sox are mentioned. If you're trying to come up with stinging insults, sorry -- it's really more like watching a five-year-old in a tantrum screeching, "YOU'RE A POOPY HEAD!!!" I am NOT a Red Sox fan, I grew up in Yankee country and I bleed pinstripes, but you're trying to shit on a team that's coming off a season to be proud of and a player who's had a remarkable career -- and as always when someone tries to shit on a better person, you end up covering yourself with crap instead. If you don't have the elementary common sense to recognize the fact and shut up, just don't complain about the stink.
excuse me
some of us enjoy being covered in crap
bleh
Let me guess, you grew up in long island but tell people you are from NYC.
anyway, the sox and spankees have a lot in common...its been multiple decades since either team won a title without a PED user in their lineup!
Go Jays! Go Os!
Here's the thing about Jays fans
Come October, they have to go back to being Leafs fans.
I really pity them. But hey, this is the 50th anniversary of their last Cup win.
I am a canadiens fan
i dont like hockey and find it boring but watching all these suburbanites come into the city for bruins games and lower the quality of life instantly made me a Canadiens fan.
Anyway, so who has more titles? Bruins or Canadiens?
Sobo thinks Broncos dont cheat
But the internet disagrees.

what's in a name
"Can we stop with naming things after sports people please?"
Well, it seems it's either sports figures or politicians in this town...
Panda Express?
Panda Express?
Is that a bridge, or an
Is that a bridge, or an overpass? Overpasses don't usually have names.
Always this bitter?
What difference does it make?
People love bridges. they
People love bridges. they take lots of pictures of them, put them in paintings, use them as landmarks, propose marriage atop them. Overpasses don't get that sort of love.
You might be surprised
I'm sure I've seen named overpasses in the Boston area. I always thought it was pretty sad, as tributes go.
Please - take a brick out of
Please - take a brick out of the ground and someone will come by shortly and name it 'Something Square"
you must not get out much
One of the first things that I noticed when I moved here 30 years ago was that everything got a name and a plaque - including overpasses!
Yawkey Way
should be renamed considering the citizens of Boston helped contribute to Ortiz's salary by letting the Red Sox lease that street for pennies on the dollar of it's actual value. Why would we name a public bridge for a multi-millionaire sports personality?
Because it's fun?
All it costs is some paint.
I say do it on one condition - along with his name put up his most famous quote - on both sides of the bridge!
Move along the air rights
Maybe if DOT et al could figure out how to develop the air rights on either side of the to-be-Ortiz'd overpass there would be an improvement in the gameday and every other day experience, to say nothing of additional tax base and economic opportunity.
Meh, screw that hard stuff. Let's name the bridge instead.
The air rights were given to
The air rights were given to John Rosenthal without a competitive bid a decade plus ago. He's done nothing but beg for more public subsidies since the. A rich politically connected do nothing out of towner crying poor hoping to make more money at public expense.
Don't expect anything to ever get built there as long as Rosenthal is running his con game.
Don't blame him
Blame the pols that play along so he donates to their campaigns. He's just doing his job.
He is a commercial product
Make his billionaire owner pay for their very corporate advertising and glorification.
This town is so hopelessly corrupt and stupid. I want to pay the universities and hospitals to move away, just so that this town can self-destruct from it's own utter civic incompetence.
There are places you could move
Like Baltimore or Detroit, for starters.
Flint? Gary?
They don't have nearly as many universities - you could enjoy your dream of Boston more immediately.
Or, you know, you could take
Or, you know, you could take your false dilemma fallacy and take it to Detroit yourself.
Plenty of places out there better than Boston. Just because someone is unhappy with what the city is doing doesn't mean they need to be told to or want to move elsewhere. That's one of the problems with Massholes. Instead of "don't like it, let's fix it" the attitude is "don't like it, move to New Hampshire".
Boston civics is stuck in Detroit-think
If the out-of-towners weren't keeping Boston alive with the universities and technology industries that require people from out of town to be imported, Boston's way of thinking and doing things would have destroyed itself already.
Let's check the news and see what corrupt development swindle is being cloaked by some big-money sports event.
