Cuban restaurant in Jamaica Plain closes for good
By adamg on Tue, 10/10/2023 - 2:40pm
El Mundo Boston reports that El Oriental de Cuba on Centre Street has closed for good. Owner and founder Nobel Garcia died in 2021 and after two years of trying to keep it going, his daughters decided it was time to say goodbye. It will be replaced by a Mexican restaurant.

I used to live down the street from them on Paul Gore St. They will be missed.
Dang
I moved away several years ago, but I guess if you want to keep nice things, you need to go there and tell everyone you know to go there. This is a bummer.
Dang
Did you read either article? They closed because it was difficult to give the business the attention it required; it had nothing to do with a lack of customers.
Isn't there one corner
Isn't there one corner Boylston and Centre?
Fingers crossed
Please let the new spot have a liquor license -- the lack of one was El Oriental's biggest flaw. Would love to have a Mexican spot that's a little more lively than Acapulco but that won't cost $50 per person after 2 drinks like Casa Verde does.
Wait, what?
I don't think I could name you a restaurant inside of 128 that has prices low enough for you to average less than $50/person if you're each getting two drinks and dinner.
Agreed on hoping the new place has a liquor license, even if it's only beer & wine. And like everybody else in JP, I'm mourning the loss of a really amazing Cuban place.
dammit
I was afraid this was the case. Will really miss the lovely staff and running into my neighbors here. And the chicken fricasee and the cubano.
They Will Be Sorely Missed
The roast pork special there set me on a years-long quest to learn to better roast pork. I'm getting closer, but I will miss theirs. Same goes for their shrimp and rice and mofongo.
Great people, great food, great atmosphere. I feel lucky to have gotten to visit them as much as I did.
